School Life

Outdoor Curriculum

At Friends’ Prep, we seize every opportunity to immerse ourselves in the great outdoors. From taking our literacy and numeracy lessons outdoors to our Forest School curriculum, we recognise the considerable benefits of getting beyond the classroom, whether that’s on campus, a visit to Wallace Park or further afield.

Outdoor education has been proven to:

  • Boost self-confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance.
  • Promote team building, cooperation, camaraderie and personal responsibility within a group.
  • Develop problem solving skills.
  • Encourage independent learning and a desire to live adventurously.
  • Be beneficial to physical & mental health and aid sleep.

We are proud of our beautiful surroundings and our Outdoor Curriculum is enriching and great fun, it aims to instil a lifelong love for nature in all our pupils.

The children relish ‘cooking’ in our mud kitchen, building shelters, bug-hunting in the garden and growing their own fruit and vegetables. We are fortunate to work with Sharon McMaster of New Leaf Compost on a whole school horticulture curriculum which the children love.

We have recently completed a bespoke Foundation Stage woodland play area and a unique reading garden based on the works of old scholar and author Sam McBratney.

Our older pupils eagerly anticipate outdoor residential trips to Greenhill in Newcastle, County Down (Prep 6) and the Share Centre, County Fermanagh (Prep 7), where they tackle new challenges, build resilience and forge lasting memories.
