School Life

Key Stage 2

The final three years of primary education, Prep 5 to Prep 7, are known as Key Stage Two.

At this stage aim to foster a greater sense of independence and personal responsibility in our pupils so that they leave Friends’ Prep as articulate and self-confident young people with strong moral values.

Our Key Stage Two curriculum focuses on developing a strong work ethic as we prepare the children for transfer to post-primary school. We ensure that each child is supported to strive for their personal goals and reach their potential.

Friends’ Prep follows the Northern Ireland Curriculum, which incorporates seven Areas of Learning:

Curriculum

Including Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing.

These skills are fundamental prerequisites for communicating in personal, social and work contexts throughout life, and the key to reading and writing for pleasure. We set high standards and encourage our pupils to be accurate and reflective speakers, readers and writers.

Including Processes in Mathematics, Number, Measures, Shape and Space and Handling Data. Numeracy is the development and application of mathematics across the curriculum and in real-life situations. At Key Stage Two, pupils continue to develop all aspects of mathematical learning. These include exploring and investigating, doing and observing, talking and listening, asking questions, reflecting, drafting, reading and recording.

Including Art and Design, Music and Drama. At Key Stage Two we focus on developing technical competencies that allow children to grow and improve their skills in art, music and drama. There are a rich variety of opportunities for them to perform and exhibit to a meaningful audience both in school and in the wider local community.

Including Geography, History and Science and Technology. The pupils study a range of more complex topics with a greater emphasis on independent research and self-direction in preparation for post-primary school.

PDMU focuses on developing each child to become a confident and responsible citizen with integrity, who is able to make informed and beneficial choices.

Including Athletics, Dance, Games, Swimming and Gymnastics. Pupils are introduced to a greater range of sports and are encouraged to strive for success through regular practice; they have the opportunity to represent Friends’ Prep in inter-school competitions.

Taught in accordance with our Quaker values and the core syllabus drafted by the four main Christian Churches in Northern Ireland and specified by the Department of Education. We are inclusive in our respect for other faiths and welcome pupils from all religious backgrounds and none. We encourage the children to develop their personal understanding of faith and to enhance their spiritual and ethical awareness.
